Rachel Gilmour's Petition for Business Rates Relief for Hospitality
In last year's Budget, the Chancellor announced that business rate relief would be removed in its entirety from April of this year, having previously been reduced from 75% down to 40%.
Many of our local pubs, restaurants, cafes, hotels and entertainment venues here in Tiverton and Minehead are already struggling with escalating costs. The sad reality is that by removing their current business rate relief, more businesses will be forced to cease operating.
Our small and medium-sized businesses don’t just contribute to our national economy – they provide local jobs, support high streets, and bring our communities together.
We're hearing today (8th January 2026) that the Government may be rowing back on their plans. This is positive news, but more must be done to support our much-loved local businesses.
